Prime Video’s God of War series continues to take shape this week with the casting additions of Mandy Patinkin (Homeland, Brilliant Minds) as Odin, the All-Father, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance, The Last Witch Hunter) as Thor, the God of Thunder. Both actors join Ryan Hurst who was recently cast in the lead role as Kratos in the upcoming Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios production.
Hurst’s casting marked a significant moment for the adaptation, bringing a familiar face back into the God of War universe but in a dramatically new role. Hurst previously portrayed Thor in God of War Ragnarök, a performance that earned him a BAFTA Award nomination, making his transition to Kratos a rare and notable shift within the franchise.
The Prime Video series will draw primarily from the franchise’s more recent chapters, focusing on Kratos’ life in the Norse realm and his evolving relationship with his young son, Atreus, whose casting has yet to be announced.
After the death of his wife, Faye, Kratos embarks on a perilous journey with Atreus to fulfill her final wish, all while struggling to teach his son how to be a better god, and learning, himself, how to be a better human. This father-son bond is expected to serve as the emotional core of the series.
Patinkin’s Odin is described as a departure from the traditionally imposing image of the Norse god from popular culture but one that God of War fans will be familiar with. Not physically god-like or outwardly intimidating, this All-Father rules through intellect, manipulation, and fear. As the most powerful of the Aesir, Odin is a calculating patriarch obsessed with prophecy and deeply paranoid about Ragnarök, the Norse end of days. His willingness to manipulate and destroy in order to control fate positions him as a formidable and dangerous antagonist to Kratos.
Thor, portrayed by Ólafsson, is presented as a towering but deeply fractured figure. Once Asgard’s greatest warrior and Odin’s loyal right hand, the God of Thunder has been worn down by the cost of war and the consequences of his past actions. Haunted by guilt and regret, Thor drowns himself in alcohol and keeps his wife and children at a distance, leaving him isolated and volatile. Despite his broken state, the series makes clear that Thor’s immense power — and the danger it represents — remains just beneath the surface.
The series has already received a two-season order, with pre-production currently underway in Vancouver and additional casting in progress.
The project is led by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind), who serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout) set to direct the first two episodes.
God of War is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, and is shaping up to be one of Prime Video’s most ambitious video game adaptations to date.
