Countdown, Prime Video’s bombastic summer crime drama, has been cancelled.

A 13-episode first season premiered in June 2025, and ended on a spectacular cliffhanger on Sept. 3. In its first season Countdown followed the exploits of a special government task force of FBI, LAPD, DEA, and other specialists in their field working together to counter a nuclear threat from a Belarusian millionaire terrorist.

By episode 10, with that frenetic storyline wrapped, series creator and writer Derek Haas (NBC’s One Chicago franchise, FBI: International on CBS) gave the task force another reason to get back together with the introduction of a new homegrown threat in the form of a disillusioned, radicalized FBI agent who aims to assassinate the Governor of California, along with the President of the United States.

The show has lingered in Prime Video’s Top 10 most viewed shows since its 3 episode premiere. However Prime Video cited global viewership figures as the motive behind the cancelation move. The streamer also made the decision to cancel the Daniel Dae Kim-starring Butterfly, and coming of age drama Motorheads.

TV Pulse Magazine called Countdown “the bombastic soundtrack to your summer TV slate” praising the show’s light-hearted, character-driven drama and big action set pieces, and noting that its home on Prime Video permitted the show to break free from the constraints of traditional network television, producing a cinematic experience not often found in a typical Wednesday night slot.

Countdown starred Jensen Ackles as LAPD Detective Mark Meachum, Jessica Camacho as DEA Agent Amber Oliveras, Violett Beane as FBI Agent Evan Shepherd, Elliot Knight as FBI Special Agent Keyonte Bell, Uli Latukefu as LAPD Detective Luke Finau, and Eric Dane as FBI Special Agent Nathan Blythe.

Speaking on the cancelation, series star Jensen Ackles commented “As some of you may have seen already, Countdown did not get picked up for another season. Amazon’s gonna let it go. And it’s a bummer, because I had such an amazing time making that show. I had an absolute blast with the cast and the crew.”

Ackles maintains ties with Prime Video. The actor is set to appear in the final Season of splashy superhero series The Boys in addition to starring in the upcoming Boys spinoff Vought Rising. He will also guest in Season 3 of CBS drama Tracker.
