“Shadow and Bone” Renewed For Season 2

Netflix’s sweeping fantasy series Shadow and Bone is officially returning for season 2.

The streamer announced the news this week, as part of its ‘Geeked Week’ celebration of all things genre.

“I’m honored and thrilled to return to the Grishaverse and continue the stories of these endearing characters, particularly [the goat] Milo,” Executive producer and showrunner Eric Heisserer said in a statement.

The series, set in a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, centers on a young soldier, Alina Starkov, who uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.

Speaking on the renewal, Grishaverse book series author Leigh Bardugo said “I’ve been writing in the Grishaverse for nearly ten years now, so I’m thrilled we get to keep this adventure going. There are so many places we’ve barely gotten to visit and I can’t wait to introduce our audience to more of the saints, soldiers, thugs, thieves, princes and privateers who make this world so much fun to explore. It’s going to be real magic to see our brilliant, talented cast expand.”

Season one (spoilers ahead) ended with Jessie Mei Li’s Alina finally reunited with Mal (Archie Renaux), having come to a fuller understanding of her power as the Sun Summoner. However, her would-be lover, and arch nemesis, General Kirigan, aka the Darkling (Ben Barnes), is far from dead, as Alina presumes. The closing moments of the finale reveal Kirigan’s emergence from the Fold, seemingly magically altered and even more powerful than before. Oh, and trailing several Volcra, now under his direct control.

The main season one cast, including Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, Danielle Galligan, Calahan Skogman, and Ben Barnes, will return.

Season 2 is set to consist of eight, one-hour episodes.
