Good news for all those who BELIEVE!
Ted Lasso is officially returning for a fourth season. The news was confirmed by Apple TV today, who also tell us Jason Sudeikis is set to return as both star and executive producer.
“As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap,’” said Sudeikis, “in season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”
“Ted Lasso has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fanbase all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unwavering belief,” added Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “Everyone at Apple is thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Jason and the brilliant creative minds behind this show.”
Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie) are all confirmed to return, while Juno Temple (Keeley) is in negotiations. Nick Mohammed (Nate) has previously teased his involvement. Other cast members are yet to be confirmed.
Additionally, the writer’s room is led by Sudeikis, with the new addition of Jack Burditt (Modern Family, 30 Rock) this season.
Sudeikis executive produces alongside Brendan Hunt (coach Beard), Joe Kelly, Jane Becker, Jamie Lee and Bill Wrubel. Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) serves as writer and executive producer alongside Leanne Bowen. Sarah Walker and Phoebe Walsh will serve as writers and producers for season four, and Sasha Garron co-produces. Julia Lindon will write for season four, and Dylan Marron will serve as story editor. Bill Lawrence executive produces via his Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content. Doozer’s Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer also serve as executive producers.
While the first 3 seasons focused on Ted’s coaching of a premiere league mens’ football team, the show ended (for all intents and purposes) with Ted saying goodbye to England and returning to Kansas to be with this son. However, season 4 will see Ted taking on a women’s team at AFC Richmond, having made the decision to return to the club. Sudekis confirmed the season’s new direction on The New Heights podcast on Friday morning.
Ted Lasso earned praise popularity when it first aired during the global pandemic in 2020. The show’s first first season was nominated for 20 Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the most nominated first-season comedy in Emmy history.
Meanwhile, Sudeikis, Waddingham, and Goldstein won for their performances, and the series won the 2021 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Sudeikis also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy in addition to the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.
The series repeated all three of those awards the following year.
The show ended in May 2023, after 3 seasons, but with Apple TV keen to revive it in some manner, subject to the cast’s availability, and a suitable new story direction.
More as we have it.
