It’s official. Life is Strange is coming to TV.

The critically acclaimed video game about Max Caulfield, a young woman with the ability to rewind time, has been snapped up by Prime Video, with Charlie Covell (End of the F***ing World, KAOS) serving as creator, executive producer, and showrunner.

The new series comes from game publishersSquare Enix, in addition to Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap and will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

The story follows Max, a photography student, who discovers she can rewind time while saving the life of her childhood best friend, Chloe. As she struggles to understand this new skill, the pair investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student, uncovering a dark side to their town that will ultimately force them to make an impossible life or death choice that will impact them forever.

Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will executive produce under their Story Kitchen banner.

“Story Kitchen has always believed that Life is Strange deserved to be more than just a game — it’s a cultural touchstone,” said Story Kitchen’s Dimitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg in a statement. “After a decade-long journey, we’re honored to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners at Square Enix, our brilliant showrunner/writer Charlie Covell, and the amazing team at LuckyChap. Together, this thoughtfully assembled dream team is ready to share Life is Strange with the world in an entirely new way!”

“It’s a huge honor to be adapting Life Is Strange for Amazon MGM Studios,” added showrunner Charlie Covell “I am a massive fan of the game, and I’m thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen and LuckyChap. I can’t wait to share Max and Chloe’s story with fellow players and new audiences alike.”

“For years we’ve had so many people asking us to create a Life is Strange TV show and we’re so pleased to finally partner with Amazon MGM Studios who we trust will do an incredible job bringing our universe to life,” said Jon Brooke and Lee Singleton, Studio Heads at Square Enix.”

The original video game series debuted in 2015, and was published over 5 unique episodes. A prequel, Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, developed by Deck Nine, was released in 3 episodes throughout 2017, followed by a downloadable content (DLC) bonus episode in early 2018.

Dontnod developed the sequel Life Is Strange 2 and its spin-off The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, both released between 2018 and 2019.

The third main installment, Life Is Strange: True Colors, crafted by Deck Nine, launched in full on September 10, 2021. Deck Nine also developed the fourth installment, Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, released on October 29, 2024.

Additionally, a remastered collection featuring the original game and its prequel hit shelves in February 2022.

The franchise extended into a comic series following one of the original game’s possible endings, another comic series set after True Colors’ conclusion, and an in-universe novel.

Prime Video’s adaptation of the source material marks the franchise’s first foray into TV.

The streamer has previously adapted the Fallout, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, and Secret Level games to series. Writing is also underway on a God of War adaptation, with legendary screenwriter Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind, Outlander, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine) tapped as showrunner, in addition to a Mass Effect series based on BioWare’s game trilogy. The project entered active development in November 2024, with Daniel Casey (Kin, The Fast Saga) writing.

This week, Prime Video also announced a Tomb Raider TV series adaptation starring Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner in the lead role.
