Fans of The Umbrella Academy are pretty used to seasons of the zany comic book adaptation ending with whopping cliffhangers, but season 3’s ender provided perhaps the biggest mystery yet. (Spoilers ahead if you are not caught up.)

By the final episode of season 3, our favorite dysfunctional family were largely unable to stop the Kugelblitz from devouring their world entirely, and after facing off against dear old Dad, aka Sir Reginald Hargreeves, found themselves transported to yet another universe in which they appear to be regular citizens without powers. While Allison seems to be unaffected by this latest change in circumstance (and hello again ‘real’ Ben!), Dad is very much alive and well here (in addition to being pretty ubiquitous in this new AU), where he promises to be a formidable opponent in the show’s final season.

“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago,” series creator Steve Blackman commented in a statement on the renewal. “But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for Season 4, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”

Based on the award-winning comic book series of the same name created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics, The Umbrella Academy is a live action series that follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes – Luther, Diego, Allison, Vanya, Klaus and Number Five – as they work together to solve their adoptive father Reginald Hargreeves’ mysterious death, while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.

The series stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya and Colm Feore.

Series creator Steve Blackman will return as showrunner and executive producer.
