In a major win for fans of the “Boy!” era of PlayStation’s most storied franchise, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have officially commenced production on the live-action adaptation of God of War.
The announcement, made on February 27, 2026, was accompanied by a striking first-look image of Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson, who are set to bring the iconic father-son duo of Kratos and Atreus to life. The ambitious collaboration between Sony, Amazon, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions signals a massive vote of confidence in the project, which has already secured a rare two-season order from Prime Video.
The series is set to follow the deeply personal and perilous journey of Kratos and Atreus as they travel across the Nine Realms to scatter the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye.
At its heart, the narrative explores a complex dual redemption arc: Kratos struggles to guide his son toward a godhood better than his own blood-soaked past, while Atreus attempts to reconnect his father with his long-buried humanity. The production has assembled a formidable ensemble to populate this mythic landscape, including Mandy Patinkin as the All-Father Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the God of Thunder, Thor, and Ed Skrein as the relentless Baldur. The cast is rounded out by Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as the “smartest man alive,” Mimir, and the fan-favorite dwarven blacksmiths Sindri and Brok, played by Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn.
Ronald D. Moore, the creative force behind Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Moore is joined by an executive producing team that includes Cory Barlog, the creative director of the 2018 game, and Asad Qizilbash. Frederick E.O. Toye, fresh off the success of Shōgun and Fallout, has signed on to direct the first two episodes.
More as we have it.
