David Boreanaz Cast as the New Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files Reboot at NBC
Veteran TV star David Boreanaz, best known for his roles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Bones, and SEAL Team, has officially been cast in the lead role of the upcoming The Rockford Files reboot pilot at NBC.
Should the pilot gain a series order, the reboot will reimagine the classic 1970s detective drama originally led by James Garner. In the new version, Boreanaz will portray private investigator James “Jim” Rockford, a character defined by his charm, world-weary wit, and moral center.
Per the Network’s official loglines: Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn’t commit, James Rockford returns to private investigation in Los Angeles, using his charisma and street smarts to solve cases. His quest for legitimacy quickly lands him at odds with both law enforcement and organized crime.
In a thoughtful move, Boreanaz reached out to James Garner’s daughter, Gigi, before officially accepting the role. Gigi publicly praised his gesture and expressed her full support for the reboot, saying she believes he is the right actor for the part.
In addition to starring, Boreanaz will also serve as a producer on the project, alongside executive producer and writer Mike Daniels, as well as producers Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly. The project marks a reunion for Boreanaz with Timberman and Beverly who both executive produced SEAL Team.
The original The Rockford Files aired for six seasons from 1974 to 1980 and became one of television’s most beloved crime dramas, earning Emmys and a lasting legacy in the detective genre.
This reboot aims to modernize the concept while honoring the spirit of the classic, bringing Rockford’s investigative adventures into the present day. Originally set in Los Angeles, the pilot will shoot in Atlanta with additional filming in LA.
Boreanaz’s casting marks his first major TV lead role since SEAL Team concluded in 2024.
The pilot comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
