The survival horror genre has a new king, and its name is Resident Evil Requiem.
Just five days after its global launch on February 27, 2026, Capcom officially announced today that the ninth mainline installment has surpassed 5 million units sold worldwide.
The milestone it marks the fastest-selling entry in the history of the 30-year-old franchise, outpacing heavy hitters like Resident Evil Village and the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 4 Remake.
👑 A Record-Breaking Debut
It’s been an undeniably great launch weekend for the game. It took previous modern entries months to hit the 5-million mark. Requiem achieved it in just under a week. The success was particularly visible on PC, where the game reached a franchise-record peak of over 344,000 concurrent players on Steam, more than doubling the launch window of the RE4 Remake.
How it compares (Time to 5 Million Sales):
- Resident Evil Requiem: 5 Days
- Resident Evil 4 Remake: ~3 Months
- Resident Evil Village: ~5 Months
🌪️ A Perfect Storm
Industry analysts point to a “perfect storm” of factors that contributed to this explosive start:
- The 30th Anniversary Factor: Launching in the same month as the series’ 30th anniversary, Capcom leaned heavily into nostalgia, marketing the game as a definitive celebration of the franchise’s legacy.
- The Return of Leon S. Kennedy: After months of secrecy, the reveal of fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy as a dual protagonist alongside newcomer Grace Ashcroft sent hype levels into overdrive.
- A “Best of Both Worlds” Gameplay Loop: Requiem successfully bridges the gap between the “suffocating horror” of the recent first-person entries and the “exhilarating action” of the mid-2000s era.
- Technical Showpiece: Built on the latest iteration of the RE Engine, the game has been lauded for its photorealistic character models and lighting, particularly on the PS5 Pro and the newly launched Nintendo Switch 2.
With Requiem’s contribution, the total cumulative sales for the Resident Evil series now exceed 183 million units. At this rate, the franchise is well on its way to crossing the 200-million mark before the end of the decade.
Capcom has already expressed “heartfelt gratitude” to the fans for three decades of support and hinted that post-launch content is already in the works to keep the momentum going.
Resident Evil Requiem is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
