In a surprising turn of events, Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios have announced a significant price reduction for The Outer Worlds 2, the upcoming sci-fi RPG sequel to The Outer Worlds set to launch on October 29, 2025.
Initially revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2025 with a controversial $79.99 price tag for the standard edition, the game will now retail for $69.99, aligning with current market standards for AAA titles. This decision, announced on July 23, 2025, comes after significant backlash from fans and industry observers, marking a rare reversal in the face of consumer feedback.
The game promises a deeper narrative, expanded combat mechanics, and a vibrant new setting in the Arcadia star system, where players take on the role of an Earth Directorate agent navigating a factional war. However, the enthusiasm was quickly overshadowed by the announcement of its $79.99 price point, making it the first Xbox Game Studios title to break the $70 barrier for a standard edition. This move followed a broader industry trend, with titles like Mario Kart World for the Nintendo Switch 2 also launching at $80, prompting heated discussions about rising game prices.
At time Microsoft told IGN “We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players.”
Obsidian’s game director, Brandon Adler, addressed the controversy at Summer Game Fest, clarifying that the pricing decision was made by Xbox, not the developers. “We’re a game developer. We love to make games. We don’t set the prices for our games,” Adler stated, expressing a desire for broader accessibility. His comments underscored the disconnect between developers and publishers, with Microsoft’s pricing strategy appearing to prioritize profits or push Game Pass subscriptions over affordability.
On July 23, 2025, Obsidian announced the price reduction via a cheeky, in-universe social media post on its BlueSky and X accounts: “Dear Galactic Citizens! We have received your SOS via skip drone about the pricing. As an organization devoted to making sure that corporations do not go unfettered, we at the Earth Directorate have worked with [REDACTED] to revise the price of The Outer Worlds 2.”
The post confirmed the new $69.99 price for the standard edition, with Microsoft also committing to reimbursing pre-order customers who paid the original $80. An Xbox spokesperson told Windows Central that the company aims to keep full-priced holiday releases at $69.99, “in line with current market conditions,” suggesting the $80 experiment may be paused for now.
The price cut is a rare victory for gamers, demonstrating the power of collective feedback in influencing corporate decisions.
