READY FOR HER CLOSE UP

A reality show contestant lands at the hospital with an unusual delusion on Brilliant Minds’ Sept. 29 episode.

Titled “The Contestant” the hour sees a disillusioned young woman at breaking point suddenly imagining she’s an unwilling participant in a reality TV show.

Convinced the docs, interns, and hospital staff are all actors, and that her every interaction is being filmed for a hidden audience, the episode lobs some fun grenades about the show’s medical drama stock characters, despite its weighty subject matter.

“By the way, I know you’re not a real doctor,” our patient tells Dr. Wolf.

”You’re right, I just play one on TV!” Wolf responds with a twinkle in his eye.

But it’s not all fun this week. As Oliver struggles to come to terms with the sudden departure of his Dad, Dr. Carol Pierce finds herself facing the Medical Board over her professional conduct. (In case you need reminding, Carol continued to treat Alison, the woman with whom her husband was having an affair, after she discovered the truth about their relationship.)

As Josh tries to help her to face a fierce cross examination, Carol wonders if she should lie about Alison in order to save her job.

Meanwhile, new second-year resident Dr. Charlie Porter continues to not make friends and alienate people, and someone has a career change in mind!

And if you’re wondering if we will see more on that season premiere cold open which saw Oliver in a psychiatric facility, the answer is yes. Bellamy Young (Scandal, Prodigal Son) joins the cast this week as Amelia Fredericks, the clinical director of Hudson Oaks psychiatric facility where Oliver will find himself 6 inexplicable months from now.

“The Contestant” buzzes in on Monday, Sept. 29 at 10 PM on NBC.
