The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power made its case for Season Three today at San Diego Comic-Con, drawing more than 6,500 fans into Hall H for a panel that mixed cast appearances, a new teaser trailer, and a handful of casting reveals.
Prime Video’s fantasy series brought showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to the stage alongside cast members Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman, and newcomer Jamie Campbell Bower. Series star Benjamin Walker, who plays High King Gil-galad, moderated the conversation.
The panel’s centerpiece was a new teaser trailer previewing a darker Season Three, as Sauron works to complete the One Ring and extend his control over Middle-earth — a push that forces new, uneasy alliances among the show’s realms.
Casting news dominated much of the panel. Bower, known for Stranger Things, was confirmed earlier in the week as Celeborn, Galadriel’s long-lost husband, alongside Zubin Varla (Andor) as Khamûl the Easterling. During the panel itself, producers added three more names to the roster: Eddie Marsan as Thrain, older brother to King Durin IV; Andrew Richardson as Anarion, Isildur’s younger brother; and Adam Young as Marnûkh, described as a mysterious orc character.
A separate, in-room-only featurette gave the crowd a look at the season’s creature work, including fell-beasts, war elephants called Mûmakil, and the return of the Balrog. That featurette also revealed the Balrog will speak on-screen for the first time, voiced by actor Simon Pegg.
The panel got an unscripted jolt partway through when four armored Nazgnagôl walked into Hall H. The characters are new to the series this season and serve as ring-servants of Sauron — an earlier, Second Age version of the Ringwraiths later known as the Nazgûl.
Season Three picks up five years after the fall of Eregion, with Sauron’s forces having overrun most of Middle-earth. What remains standing are Khazad-dûm, where the dwarves have sealed themselves inside the mountain, and the elven strongholds of Lindon and Rivendell, protected by their Three Rings. Meanwhile, in his newly finished tower of Barad-dûr, Sauron is racing to complete the One Ring — a threat that pushes dwarves, elves, men, and wizards toward an uneasy alliance.
The season’s first four episodes arrive November 11, with episodes five and six following on November 18, and the final two episodes closing out the season on November 25.
Payne and McKay executive produce alongside Lindsey Weber, Justin Doble, Kate Hazell, and executive producer-director Charlotte Brändström. Matthew Penry-Davey serves as producer, with Ally O’Leary, Tim Keene, and Andrew Lee producing.
