Awards season reached a fever pitch on Sunday with the 32nd Annual Actor Awards. While the ceremony was as star-studded as ever, viewers likely noticed a significant change: the event has officially shed its “SAG Awards” moniker.
After three decades as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the union (SAG-AFTRA) decided to lean into the simplicity and global recognition of their iconic trophy. Known to industry insiders as “The Actor” since 1995, the rebranding aligns the show’s name with the physical award (much like the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys). The shift also acknowledges the union’s expansion following the SAG and AFTRA merger and targets a global audience now that the ceremony streams live on Netflix.
As SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin noted, the new title provides “clearer recognition” for a worldwide fanbase that may not be familiar with the union’s acronyms.
While the film categories saw major wins for Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) and Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), the small screen took center stage with several sweeps by familiar TV juggernauts such as Severance, The Pitt, The Studio, Adolescence, and others.
