A Little House on the Prairie reboot is in production at Netflix, it was revealed today.

The streamer announced it has ordered a “fresh take” on the story based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The new series will follow the Ingalls family’s journey from Wisconsin to Kansas, including interactions with characters from the Osage tribe.

Loglines for the drama describe the show’s aim as: Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical “Little House” books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.

Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on The Boys and The Vampire Diaries, will serve as the showrunner and executive producer for the project.

Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story,” said Netflix Drama Series VP Jinny Howe said in a statement today. “Rebecca’s vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.”

The series is being produced by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios, with additional executive producers including Joy Gorman Wettels, Dana Fox, Susanna Fogel, and Trip Friendly, the latter being the son of the original series’ executive producer, Ed Friendly.

The original series, starring Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson, and twins Lindsay and Sydney Greenbush, ran from 1974 to 1982 on NBC.
