New Achievement Unlocked: Dungeon Crawler Carl Officially Greenlit for Live-Action Series at Peacock

The Syndicate has made its decision, and the universe is about to watch the crawl live.

Peacock has officially given a straight-to-series order to a live-action television adaptation of Matt Dinniman’s smash-hit LitRPG book series, Dungeon Crawler Carl. Moving past the slow gears of early Hollywood development, the streaming service bypassed a pilot episode entirely, greenlighting a full series run. The adaptation lands in the hands of Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door Productions and Universal International Studios. Chris Yost, the veteran writer behind Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian, is officially attached to write and adapt the series.

For the uninitiated, Dungeon Crawler Carl is the crown jewel of the LitRPG genre (Literature Role-Playing Game), blending apocalyptic science fiction, high-stakes fantasy, dark humor, and video game mechanics. The story kicks off when an alien corporation flattens every building on Earth to harvest its resources. The only survivors are the few who happened to be outside at 3:00 AM. This includes Carl, a Coast Guard veteran who ran into the cold night wearing nothing but boxer shorts and a leather jacket, and Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s award-winning, highly coddled Persian show cat. To survive, Carl and Donut are forced to enter World Dungeon: an 18-level underground labyrinth run by a sadistic, increasingly unhinged artificial intelligence. The whole thing is broadcast to the galaxy as a massive, brutal pay-per-view reality game show where millions die and the viewers actively cheer for or sabotage the players.

In a recent interview, Dinniman assured fans that the production would not compromise on quality, noting that the team will not proceed if the visual execution does not meet high standards. He highlighted Fuzzy Door’s proven track record with complex visual work on projects like Ted and The Orville as a primary reason for his confidence. The live-action formatting means the show will heavily rely on high-end visual effects and extensive CGI testing, especially to bring Princess Donut and her beloved pet dinosaur, Mongo, to life. Dinniman is on board as a co-executive producer, ensuring the adaptation will preserve the dark, satirical spirit of the books.

With eight books currently in print, the latest, A Parade of Horribles, having dropped in May 2026, the creative team has a massive wealth of lore, statistics, and boss fights to pull from. Dinniman took to Instagram to thank the fanbase for pushing the series to over 10 million copies sold, a milestone that undoubtedly gave Peacock the confidence to skip the pilot phase.

Pre-production, development, and scriptwriting are actively underway. Matt Dinniman and showrunner Chris Yost are already confirmed for a dedicated San Diego Comic-Con panel to reveal more concrete details. While no official casting announcements have been made yet, fans are already wildly fan-casting who has the physical presence and the voice to pull off Carl and his iconic feline companion.

Glurp, glurp, crawlers. It’s time to get ready for the first floor.
