Marvel is heading back to Hollywood.
Disney+ has officially renewed the quirky and heartfelt Wonder Man for a second season, just months after the series made its debut, marking a rare multi-season commitment in the studio’s recent TV slate.
The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring actor navigating Hollywood while hiding his fearful and uncontrollable superhuman abilities. Simon will be joined once again by Ben Kingsley, who is set to reprise his role as fellow actor and tall-tale teller, Trevor Slattery.
Both actors are confirmed to return for Season 2.
Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the series carved out a distinctly new tone within the MCU this year, leaning into comedy-drama territory, and offering a behind-the-scenes look at fame, performance, and the absurdity of the entertainment business, even going so far as to hold a mirror up to the Marvelization of mainstream film.
Some critics began referring to it as Marvel’s Andor, in a nod to the show’s superlative acting, story, and very human heart. Wonder Man’s Hollywood-set premise, following a struggling actor pulled into the world of A list actors after he lands the superhero gig of a lifetime — all while hiding dangerous super powers of his own — offered a breath of truly fresh air, and the fragile friendship at the center of proceedings between Simon and Trevor anchored their scenes with heart, humanity, and humor. The show will surely land on many outlet’s Top Shows of the Year lists this December — including ours.
While plot details for Season 2 remain under wraps, the return of the central cast points to a continuation of the events of the season one finale, which found Simon and Trevor back in each other’s orbit. We won’t spoil events for you here in case you haven’t seen it yet, but we hear the same creative team is also expected to return, making the likelihood of a consistent tone and vision for season 2 a sure bet.
For Marvel fans, the renewal signals something bigger than just another season. In a landscape where many MCU shows have been limited runs, Wonder Man is proving that some stories, when well written and well acted, and are worth coming back to.
