Widow’s Bay, Apple TV’s comedy horror and streaming hit of the summer, has been renewed for season 2, it was revealed today.
The news came just ahead of the season one finale, which is set to drop on June 17.
“From the moment audiences arrived in Widow’s Bay, they’ve been hooked on every eerie mystery, unexpected laugh and cursed secret that Katie, Hiro, Matthew and the entire team have created,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV. “It’s become one of those shows everyone’s talking about, and we’re thrilled to see audiences continue to embrace it. We can’t wait to return for another season.”
“Season two is about how everything is great on the island and there’s nothing to worry about,” said creator, showrunner and executive producer Katie Dippold.
The series is set in Widow’s Bay, a struggling New England island community, where local mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to reverse the economic fortunes of the town. However, it’s an uphill struggle for a community without Wi-Fi, a spotty cellular reception and superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed.
Tom also desperately wants the community to respect him, but they don’t. Tom would also like his teenage son to stop sneaking out at night, and maybe respect him too. But he doesn’t. The townsfolk think Tom is soft and cowardly. And he is.
But Tom is determined to build a better future for his son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again.
Weekly episodes see Tom, his eccentric assistant Patricia (Kate O’Flynn), and a crusty sailor named Wyck (Stephen Root) battling a series of supernatural events that appear to be converging into a mega disaster no one will be able to ignore. Exploring themes of witchcraft, possession, sea monsters, ghost pirates, deadly fogs, undead slashers, zombies, and demons, the series manages to both poke fun at, and thrill audiences with classic horror themes each week, while keeping the larger mystery simmering.
Blending genuine horror with character-driven comedy, Widow’s Bay also stars Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey. The supporting cast includes K Callan and Jeff Hiller.
From Apple Studios, the series is created, showrun, and executive produced by Katie Dippold.
