Death Stranding Isolations (working title), a new anime series from Kojima productions’ Hideo Kojima and series director Takayuki Sano is headed to Disney+ in 2027.
The project was announced on Nov. 12, at Disney’s APAC Originals Preview event in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, marking Kojima Productions’ first partnership with a global streaming platform.
Kojima will serve as executive producer on the project with director Takayuki Sano (who worked on the final season of Attack on Titan) helming the series, and character designs from Ilya Kuvshinov (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045).
The series will be produced by the Japanese studio E&H Production, known for works like Ninja Kamui and the upcoming Undead Unluck.
Kuvshinov shared first concept art during the presentation — consisting of a single image for now. The project is said to feature traditional hand-drawn 2D animation described as “top-class” and “bold yet subtle.”
The story is entirely new and separate from the games’ narratives but unfolds in the same post-apocalyptic North American setting, where a cataclysmic event called the Death Stranding has isolated survivors.
The synopsis reads:
Somewhere in North America, just as Sam Bridges walks through the continent in order to save America, the someones are also trying to deal with their isolation in their own way.
An old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy with a grudge against Bridges. A girl who embraces loneliness.
On the precipice of the end of humanity and the world, their fates and hopes converge, as another story of Death Stranding begins.
The series is slated for an exclusive Disney+ release sometime in 2027, with no exact premiere date yet.
Isolations isn’t the only Death Stranding animation headed our wat: a separate short film, Death Stranding: Mosquito, directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto and written by Aaron Guzikowski, is currently also in production at ABC Animation.
Meanwhile, a Death Stranding Movie from Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One), A24, Kojima Productions, and Square Peg is also currently in production.
Kojima Productions recently announced two new game projects the horror game OD, starring Sophia Lillis, Udo Kier, and Hunter Schafer, and Physint, a stealth-action espionage game.
