BALDUR’S GATE TV SERIES IN THE WORKS

Wizards of the Coast’s Baldur’s Gate is headed for the small screen.

A Deadline exclusive taps Chernobyl scribe and The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the TV adaptation.

Mazin is joined by executive producing partners Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor and Gabriel Marano.

Chris Perkins, former Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, serves as a consultant.

The TV series will pick up the pieces following the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, and is set to see characters (both existing and new) dealing with the ramifications of the events of the game.

“After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin said in a statement.

“I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”

According to the Deadline report, Mazin intends to reach out to voice cast of Baldur’s Gate 3 to explore ways in which they can participate in the new series, similar to how The Last of Us voice talent Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Merle Dandridge appeared in the TV adaptation.

“We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig Mazin on Baldur’s Gate,” Francesca Orsi, EVP, Head of HBO Drama Programming said in a statement. “His deep and long-standing passion for the source material paired with his remarkable talent for building immersive worlds filled with rich, compelling characters promises groundbreaking results.”

Baldur’s Gate is a landmark fantasy role-playing game series rooted in Dungeons & Dragons, and one of the foundations of modern RPG storytelling.

Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, brought the series back in a huge way and included fully cinematic conversations, turn-based combat based on D&D 5th Edition, near-absurd levels of player freedom, and a story that reacts to player’s choices.

The plot involves a the player becoming infected with a mind-flayer parasite, given power instead of death, and being faced with a choice of who to become before the clock runs out — hero, villain, or something far stranger.

Baldur’s Gate 3 made history as the first game to scoop all 5 major awards — Golden Joystick, The Game Awards, D.I.C.E. Awards, Game Developers Choice Awards, and BAFTA Game Award — for best game in 2023.
