Tuesday’s return episode of The Resident sees our favorite Docs at odds with each other when personal tragedies, medical ethics, and life altering decisions elicit a maelstrom of emotions.
The episode is titled “Her Heart” and unless you’ve been living under a rock (avoiding TV promos and neglecting our weekly Resident Episode Guide, that is) then you’ll know the hour will be a difficult one for Conrad when he is asked to consult on a case involving a young woman who just happens to be the recipient of Nic’s donated heart. But more on all that in a minute. First let’s talk about:
A Difficult Conversation
The last episode of The Resident closed out on Bell and Conrad, just as Conrad was about to give Bell the (bad?) news regarding his mystery illness. It seems fitting therefore that the show picks up from that moment in the Winter Premiere, taking its time to tell us exactly what is wrong with Randolph.
However, the diagnosis will spur Bell to make an impetuous decision that will break Kit’s heart.
Trouble Ahead for Leela and Devon?
Leela and Devon are one of the few couples experiencing no heartache this week. When we first see this loved-up couple, not only are both happy and optimistic about their future careers, but also about how much time they will now both get to spend together.
However as the hour progresses, we see Leela showing a major aptitude for Neurosurgery during her rotation with Billie. Although Billie takes care not to try to try to snurch Leela from AJ’s Heart program, she does advise her to choose a medical branch that she is passionate about. When Billie points out that Neurosurgery requires full time commitment and therefore probably no kids for the foreseeable future, Leela doesn’t see a problem. But will Devon feel the same way?
A Numbers Game
AJ is incensed this week when he persuades Devon to include his cancer-stricken mother in Devon’s upcoming cancer drug trial. Although Devon is happy to interview Carol for the program, it soon becomes apparent she may not be the best fit. What follows involves a LOT of heated debate, accusations, and some very bad feelings.
New Girl
Oh hello again Dr. Sullivan. We had almost forgotten about you! What? That’s what you would prefer? That’s right, this week we will see the more than capable Kincaid Sullivan acing her duties in the ER, while simultaneously doing her best to fly under the radar of friendship and camaraderie.
Sullivan has sparked the curiosity of her fellow ER staff, who are stumped when they cannot find so much as an Instagram account in her name.
#KitBell
This is a big one for Kitbell fans.
As Bell reels from his diagnosis, Kit will struggle with how best to reach him, especially when Bell makes some major decisions without her.
Eventually Kit will take inspiration from a children’s book she overhears Sammy reading aloud to Gigi. Sometimes, simple is best.

Prepare your tissues as Randolph tells Kit “You fell in love with the man I wanted to be, and I became him for you.”
And also, as a tearful Kit reminds Bell later “You are the great love of my life.”

Heart Felt
As we mentioned above, Nic’s heart will take center stage in Tuesday’s Premiere, as Conrad works to understand why his wife’s heart is failing its terrified recipient. As Conrad works to solve a medical mystery, his friends worry that failing his latest patient will cause him to spiral back into grief.
While we won’t spoil the outcome for you here, we can tell you we LOVED the final scene, closing out to credits and featuring a doctor, his daughter, and his patient.
