Fans of FOX’s The Resident are no doubt aware that Jan. 17th’s episode is also the show’s final hour of the sixth season.

With no renewal news yet on a seventh, thoughts are inevitably turning to just how Tuesday’s instalment might play out as a series finale.

We’ve seen the episode a little early, thanks to our friends at the network, and have done a little prepping of our own — in the form of this article. (We didn’t have time to bake a cake.)

As always, we have carefully omitted any major spoilers (there are several surprises throughout the season finale we are not going to ruin for you here) so that your enjoyment of the hour is not compromised. If you would like to know more about our guidelines on spoilers (we’ve given the subject a really weird and obsessive amount of time and attention), you can catch up on our Spoiler Policy any time.

Tuesday’s “All Hands on Deck” will see Conrad pulled from birthday preparations with Billie and Gigi as Sammie comes into Chastain with a mystery illness. Meanwhile, as Governor Betz is prepped for his heart transplant surgery, Kit wonders if he will remain true to his word.

Let’s dig in to all of that a little more below:

Faith and Trust

When Sammie is rushed to Chastain with a mystery illness, worried grandparents Kit and Randolph fear that her cancer may have returned. What is a cash-strapped hospital whose paediatric unit has recently been gutted to do?

Kit turns to Cade’s Dad, Ian Sullivan, for help, without any knowledge of his previous addiction problems. And as the episode digs a little deeper into Daddy Sullivan’s issues, we begin to see that Ian is both the best and worst candidate for the job.

Love

Fans of Billie and Conrad often ask us if there are any special moments between these lovebirds to look out for in the next episode. Many are aware that Conrad (who never said the “L” word to Cade while they were together!) has yet to tell Billie he loves her.

So, with that in mind … should fans except an I love you this week? We can’t say. However, there is at least one Hawkins who is happy to throw out an “I Love you Billie” this Tuesday.

Yep. You guessed it.

It’s Gigi.

Romance

Look, yes, ok! There are a couple of beautifully romantic moments between Conrad and Billie to look out for this week.

There we said it!

We think you guys will be especially pleased by one particular scene towards the end of the hour.

We may have even shed a tear, but you didn’t read that here.

Marriage

Someone pops the question. Someone says yes.

Complications

Both Conrad and Devon face unforeseen mysteries that threaten the lives of their respective patients this week, but who do Chastain’s best Doc and Chastain’s best former student turn to in times of great urgency? Each other of course!

Watch as Conrad and Devon break out the whiteboards and brainstorm each other’s cases side by side as the clock ticks down.

An Unsafe Safe Pair of Hands

Not even Conrad and Devon’s brilliance can prevent things going wrong in the season finale, and when the seemingly routine surgeries of two patients go suddenly terribly wrong, both end up in the hands of Dr. Bell and Dr. Sullivan.

You may need that advert break to recover from the nail-biting stress of these scenes.

Another Life in Their Hands

While the medical cases of The Resident’s season finale are bound to resonate with fans for various reasons, let us not forget that Chastain itself is also on the operating table this week.

And while Kit seeks Governor Betz’s “word of honor” that he will save the hospital pending a successful heart transplant, she can’t help but suspect that Betz may not be a man of his word.

Just as well Betz’ surgery is a straight forward slam dunk. Right?

A Final Word

We love The Resident, we love talking about The Resident, and sharing our thoughts, advance previews, photos, videos, and everything else FOX throws at us about the show that they want people to see. Obviously, we sincerely hope The Resident will be renewed for a seventh season. If it isn’t, you might like to know that the breakneck pace and nail-biting action stops about 15 minutes from the end of the finale, giving fans time to check in on each major character as they discuss their future plans, their hopes, and their commitments to Chastain and to each other in a heartfelt and meaningful way. There may even be a bit of torch-passing.

If this is the end my friend, it’s a fitting one.

The Resident’s Season Six Finale “All Hands on Deck” airs Tuesday, Jan. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
