Welcome to the next 7 days in TV Land.
This week Netflix reboots 70’s and 80’s classic Little House on the Prairie. Kinda. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine’s adaptation is actually a book series and not a TV series adaptation, but that’s not going to stop certain of Gen Xers from forcing their adult kids to watch the original opening credits on YouTube with her before writing this article. Ahem. The new show follows the close-knit Ingalls family as they build a new life on the Western frontier, where the joys of nature and the struggle for survival are deeply intertwined.
And if the thought of California frontier life doesn’t grab you, you may be interested in a frontier of a different sort. Apple TV is airing the finale of the surprisingly excellent Star City this week. The show is spun off from For All Mankind, a speculative fiction series detailing an alternative version of the space race of the late 1960’s and 70’s, as seen through the eyes of the astronauts, families, and scientists who helped humanity reach for the stars. However, with recent seasons of Mankind showing their age, spy thriller Star City is a fresh and intriguing take on the OG series’ same events from a Soviet angle. Sporting a mainly British cast, and filmed in Lithuania, this is one to watch.
All of that plus Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, House of the Dragon, Silo (Juliette Nicholas has really taken to her mayoral cashmere knits!), the Colin Farrell sci-fi-film-noir Sugar, the complete series of The Tick, and more TV.
Here’s how the week ahead is shaking out.
