HBO’s adaptation of Sony’s Playstation/Naughty Dog juggernaut video game series The Last of Us has found its Joel in Mandalorian and Wonder Woman star Pedro Pascal.
The ambitious new TV series from Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann is set in a dystopian future in which the world has been overrun by deadly spores that turn their hosts into mindless zombie-like mutants.
Now, 20 years on, we meet Joel Miller (Pascal), a hardened survivor with a traumatic past involving the death of his daughter at the beginning of the outbreak. Joel is tasked with delivering a 14 year old girl Ellie (Games of Thrones star Bella Ramsey) from their shared quarantine zone across the United States to an outlawed organization known as the Fireflies. Unknown to Joel, Ellie is immune to the contagion, and might just represent humanity’s last hope for a cure.
However, thrown together by circumstance, the gruff and grizzled Joel and the curious and irrepressible Ellie form a bond that will be put to the ultimate test on their journey across a ravaged country.
Kantemir Balagov is set to direct the pilot episode. The series is a co-production with with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog.
