S.W.A.T. has been canceled. Again.
The long running drama series, starring Shemar Moore, and based on the popular movie of the same name, focused on a specialized tactical unit that represents the last stop in law enforcement in Los Angeles.
The show has been running on CBS since 2017.
S.W.A.T. was originally cancelled after a six season run in May 2023 — a decision that was quickly reversed within days.
However after announcing a seventh 13-episode farewell season, the Network reversed its decision — again — by ordering an eighth full season in April 2024.
“It’s heartbreaking news,” said showrunner Andrew Dettman of the cancelation. “Primarily because it’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we’ve always been proud of. They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can’t give them enough credit. I feel so privileged to have been a part of the S.W.A.T. family.”
“It’s been an extraordinary privilege to work on S.W.A.T. for eight seasons and tell the stories of Hondo and 20-Squad,” added executive producer Shawn Ryan. “I thank our fans, Shemar Moore, the rest of our cast, our producers, Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios and CBS for the opportunity. Most of all I want to thank our tireless, dedicated crew who made our writers, directors and cast always look good. My greatest concern right now is for them.”
The show currently garners 4.9 million total viewers (Live+7 day delayed playback), a figure down some 20% from its Season 7 viewership.
It joins FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted as shows axed by the Network this week. Notably, CBS has yet to make a decision on The Equalizer, The Neighborhood, Poppa’s House, and freshman drama Watson.
Fans of the series have organized a campaign to save S.W.A.T., details of which can be found here.
