HBO Casts Agents of SHIELD Star as Tommy in “The Last of Us”

In the latest casting news from HBO’s ambitious adaptation of Sony and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Gabriel Luna has been cast as Tommy Miller, Joel’s younger brother.

Luna took on the role of Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider in Season 4 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC. He is also known for his portrayal of Gabriel/REV-9 in Terminator: Dark Fate.

In the video games series, Tommy is Joel’s younger army-vet brother, and assists Joel’s escape from Austin, Texas at the start of the game. Tommy, who is initially an optimist but comes to be more entrenched in his views, is bent on a mission of revenge throughout the second game.

Luna joins Pedro Pascal (Joel), and Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey (Ellie) in HBO’s high-profile adaptation of the original material. The series is from from Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.

The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic United States ravaged by a mutant Cordyceps fungus that turns its hosts into aggressive zombified creatures known as “the infected”. Breathing in fungal spores or being bitten by an infected individual leads to infection without hope of cure.

With high infection rates ravaging the country, society collapses, leaving survivors to take shelter in oppressive militarized quarantine zones, where food and medicine are scarce, and where a military presence doesn’t always guarantee safety.

The series explores what happens when Joel is tasked with smuggling a teenaged girl, Ellie, across the country and into the hands of an illegal organization known as the Fireflies.

Joel reluctantly takes on the assignment, only later discovering his young charge holds the key to rebuilding humanity in the form of her immunity to infection … if he can keep her alive long enough to reach the Fireflies.
