Dr. Oliver Wolf is about to make a stunning breakthrough with patient John Doe in Monday’s episode of Brilliant Minds.

The episode, titled “The Haunted Marine” follows both the case of the week (more on that in a moment), and the show’s ongoing serialized storyline involving a paralysed but mentally aware patient whose case has been mismanaged since day one.

Fans may already know that Brilliant Minds is based on the real life work of British neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, whose books in turn were adapted to the big screen on a number of occasions.

Monday’s episode dips a toe into the 1990 movie Awakenings, starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro. The film famously traced a doctor’s breakthrough with a catatonic patient, much like Wolf’s John Doe. Prepare for breakthroughs and surprises as Wolf and the interns take a bold step forward in their most frustrating case.

However, the result may just serve to drive a wedge between the burgeoning relationship between Wolf and Dr. Josh Nicholas in the episode’s final charged scene.

Meanwhile, Van shares his diagnosis of MTS with Dana, but can she keep a secret? And Jacob makes a sloppy pass at Ericka but can’t remember it the next morning.

In our case of the week the gang meet disgraced former veteran Steve Hill, who is haunted by visions of the fallen comrades from his unit.

Suffering from anxiety, depression, and hallucinations, Hill is convinced the military has placed an experimental microchip in his head. But things get complicated when the docs discover the former marine never actually engaged in any live combat while serving.

As the mystery unfolds, Wolf is served a painful reminder from his own traumatic past.

The “Haunted Marine” episode of Brilliant Minds airs Monday, Oct. 21 at 10 pm ET/PT on NBC.
