Per Variety today, a Mass Effect TV series, based on the Microsoft and Bioware video game trilogy of the same name, is in production at Amazon MGM Studios.

According to the report, Mass Effect video game director Daniel Casey is set to write and executive produce the upcoming series.

Karim Zreik (The Defenders, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage etc.) will executive produce under his Cedar Tree Productions banner. (Cedar Tree is currently under an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios.)

Meanwhile, film producer Ari Arad, who has previously adapted the Uncharted, Ghost in the Shell, and Borderlands games to film, in addition to several Marvel projects including Iron Man, Ghost Rider, and The Punisher, and EA’s Michael Gamble are tipped to executive produce.

Although Amazon MGM have yet to confirm the acquisition, and no details are as yet forthcoming, it is likely the show will follow the storyline of the Mass Effect sci-fi trilogy, set in the distant future and focusing on Special Forces soldier Commander Sheppard.

Sheppard is tasked with saving the Milky Way from the Reapers, a race of a race of ancient, hibernating machines who reawaken to wreak havoc across the galaxy.

A fifth Mass Effect video game is currently in production, following the original Mass Effect trilogy (2007-2012), and a fourth game, Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017), featuring a new storyline and cast.
