Set in the world of Midgar Studio’s 2021 title, Edge of Eternity, comes Edge of Memories, set for release this Fall.

The new JRPG from publisher Nacon and developer Midgar Studio was revealed via a first look trailer from IGN earlier today.

The game promises to blend dynamic action with a rich narrative, all crafted by a team of industry legends.

Here’s everything we know about Edge of Memories so far.

The upcoming game boasts an all-star lineup of talent, drawing from some of the most beloved JRPGs in history. Leading the musical charge is Yasunori Mitsuda, famed for his unforgettable compositions in Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Sea of Stars.

His work is complemented by the ethereal vocals of Emi Evans, known for her haunting contributions to NieR: Automata, with a final theme composed by Mitsuda himself.

On the gameplay front, combat design is helmed by Mitsuru Yokoyama, who shaped the fast-paced battles of Final Fantasy XV.

Character design comes courtesy of Raita Kazama, a veteran of Xenoblade Chronicles, while the story is penned by Sawako Natori, a writer from the NieR series. Rounding out the team is Cedric Menendez, composing the adaptive soundtrack for exploration and battles.

We are thrilled to expand the world of the Edge of franchise with a new installment that takes on a fresh artistic direction and marks a turning point in gameplay, shifting from the strategic turn-based style of its predecessor in favor of a more dynamic and immersive Action RPG approach,” said Jérémy Zeler-Maury, CEO of Midgar Studio. “As true JRPG enthusiasts, we have poured a lot of love into this project, and we can’t wait to share it with both fans of the genre and newcomers alike.

While Edge of Eternity met with somewhat mixed reviews, it did earn itself a dedicated following for its heartfelt nod to JRPG classics. This new chapter is set to shift gears from the strategic, turn-based combat of its predecessor to a real-time action RPG system. Players can expect combos that amplify damage and a unique “Berserk” mode, allowing characters to unleash devastating power. Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game promises vibrant visuals inspired by Japanese animation, bringing the continent of Avaris to life with rich, colorful environments ravaged by a mysterious plague known as the Corrosion.

While full narrative details remain under wraps for now, today’s initial reveal offers several tantalizing hints. The story unfolds on the continent of Avaris, a land gripped by an unprecedented scourge that transforms the world as players progress. Eline, a young itinerant Soul Whisperer, roams the land, using her fantastic abilities to heal the tormented inhabitants. To achieve victory, players must master Eline’s abilities, chain spectacular combos with her two companions, and awaken the devastating power of the Berserk that lies dormant within her.

Combat looks like it’s going to be a standout feature too, with the game moving away from turn-based roots to a dynamic, real-time system. Players will chain combos and tap into the Berserk transformation, suggesting a high-octane approach to battles against “Corroded foes.”

Teasing “intense real-time combat” Edge of Memories will allow players to:

  • String together spectacular combos by alternating between rapid strikes and devastating techniques to dominate your opponents.
  • Your allies are the key to victory. Customise your companions, and use their skills wisely to inflict more damage at crucial moments.
  • Let rage consume you and transform into a Berserker to deliver earth-shattering blows, which turn into a series of merciless executions.

Meanwhile, familiar locations will evolve, opening strange new paths and reflecting the plague’s devastating impact. Exploration also plays a key role here too, with Avaris offering vast expanses that shift over time. The soundtrack adapts to these moments with Midgar Studio’s CEO, Jérémy Zeler-Maury, emphasizing their passion as JRPG enthusiasts in aiming to craft an experience that resonates with genre veterans and newcomers alike.

Per Midgar:

  • Explore the continent of Avaris in the grip of the Corrosion – Discover rich environments with vibrant colours, and observe the scourge ravaging these enchanting landscapes. As you progress through the story, the game transforms places you have previously travelled through and creates strange new paths to take.
  • Ride a Nekaroo – Traverse the vast lands of Avaris atop this loyal feline companion and take advantage of its agility to access unreachable areas.

The setting retains the heroic-fantasy vibe of Edge of Eternity’s world of Heryon, but Midgar Studio teases a “fresh artistic direction” and a deeper, more immersive experience. With Natori’s involvement, expect a tale laced with emotional weight and existential undertones, a hallmark of her previous work.

Fans actually won’t have to wait all that long to dive in. Edge of Memories is slated for release in Fall 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The use of Unreal Engine 5 hints at a visually spectacular experience optimized for next-gen hardware, though no word yet on potential last-gen support or a Nintendo Switch version.

For hardcore JRPG fans, Edge of Memories feels like a love letter to the genre’s golden age, modernized with cutting-edge tech and real-time action. Midgar Studio, a small Montpellier-based team of developers, is taking a bold step forward after Edge of Eternity. The involvement of Mitsuda, Evans, and others elevates expectations, promising a soundtrack and story that could rival the greats. Nacon’s backing further signals confidence in this ambitious project.
