In a somewhat telegraphed move that still sent fans into a frenzy, Nathan Fillion officially announced the return of the cult-classic space Western Firefly during a reunion panel at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., yesterday, March 15, 2026.
The project, currently in advanced development, will be a canon animated series titled Firefly: Still Flyin’. It aims to bridge the narrative gap between the original 2002 television run and the 2005 feature film, Serenity.
Perhaps the most warmly welcomed part of the announcement is the involvement of the original ensemble. Fillion revealed that the surviving main cast members are set to reprise their roles through voice acting, including Gina Torres as Zoë Washburne, Alan Tudyk as Hoban “Wash” Washburne, Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra, Jewel Staite as Kaylee Frye, Sean Maher as Dr. Simon Tam, Summer Glau as River Tam, and Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb. The late Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book and passed away in 2016, was warmly remembered during the panel. While his character’s presence in the animated series remains a question, the cast’s commitment to the project has already generated over 28 million views for their viral social media campaign.
The series is being developed by Fillion’s production banner, Collision33, in partnership with 20th Television Animation. While fans might have expected franchise creator Joss Whedon to take the lead, it was confirmed that Whedon is not involved in the project, though he has reportedly given the venture his blessing. Instead, the show will be helmed by the seasoned writing-producing duo Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters. Nathan Fillion stated during the announcement that the dedication of Firefly fans has kept the show relevant for twenty-five years, and that the return of the series is something the fans truly deserve.
The move to animation is a strategic one, allowing the story to pick up directly after the 2002 series ended without having to account for the physical aging of the actors or the massive budget required for live-action sci-fi sets. The animation will be handled by ShadowMachine, the studio behind acclaimed hits like BoJack Horseman and X-Men ’97.
While the script for the pilot, titled Athenia, is complete and concept art has been revealed, the series is currently being shopped to buyers.
Fillion and the cast have called upon the fanbase to mobilize on social media to prove the project’s viability to potential streaming platforms like Disney+ or Hulu.
More as we have it.
