Black Mirror is back to bend our minds with a seventh season on April 10.
The show, created and executive produced by Charlie Brooker, returns with 6 new episodes, including a sequel to the fan-favorite sci-fi adventure USS Callister.
“You can expect a mix of genres and styles,” Brooker said during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week festival back in September of 2024. “We’ve got six episodes this time, and two of them are basically feature-length. Some of them are deeply unpleasant, some are quite funny, and some are emotional.”
Black Mirror, which originally debuted with a 3-episode first season on British TV channel Channel 4 in 2011, set out to tell a series of tightly paced, near-future dystopian stories in which new technology often led to the downfall of its characters.
Bleak, disturbing, and often containing black humor, the series quickly gathered a dedicated but mostly British sci-fi fan following, prompting Channel 4 to commission a second season in 2013.
However it wasn’t until Netflix acquired the show in 2015 that Black Mirror really took off. Longer seasons, big name talent, ambitious storylines, bigger production budgets, and fuller episodes all helped the show reach a broader global audience.
Ever innovating, Booker also took a chance by deviating from his tone on some episodes. San Juniperno was a romance with a happy ending. USS Calllister was a scifi comedy (and will be the first episode to have a sequel). Black Mirror: Bandersnatch offered fans the opportunity to choose their own story path with their TV remote control.
San Juniperno won an Emmy award for Outstanding Television Movie in 2017. USS Callister won 3 Emmys, including one for Outstanding Television Movie, in 2018, and Bandersnatch won 2 Emmys in 2019, including one for Outstanding Television Movie.
However Brooker has said that season 7 is a return to form in many ways, referring to the new season as “a little bit OG Black Mirror.”
“It’s back to basics in many ways.” said Brooker. “They’re all sci-fi stories — there’s definitely some horrifying things that occur, but maybe not in an overt horror-movie way. There’s definitely some disturbing content in it.”
Starring this season are Michele Austin (Hard Truths), Ben Bailey Smith (David Brent: Life on the Road), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), Josh Finan (Say Nothing), James Nelson-Joyce (The Outlaws), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3)
