HBO’s new drama series Lanterns, based on the DC Green Lantern comic, has kicked off production in Burbank today.
The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre, Rebel Ridge, The Lion King) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights, Bloodline), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
The series also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen.
“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion,” said showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy, today. “The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”
Lanterns is from HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.
The pilot episode is co-written by Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King.
The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct.
Lanterns is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes.
