Remedy Entertainment fans have been abuzz with excitement ever since the Games Studio announced the remakes of the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.

Here’s everything we know so far about this eagerly awaited title.

The remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2 were officially announced in April 2022, with Remedy confirming that both games will be condensed into a single cohesive title.

Remedy is teaming up with Rockstar Games, the publisher of the original games, to bring both classics back to life for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. With an AAA budget and scope, Max Payne may be about make a comeback that will blow Alan Wake’s return out of the water.

Remedy has also confirmed the game will be developed using their proprietary Northlight Engine, the same technology behind critically acclaimed games like Control and Alan Wake 2. This ensures that the remakes will deliver cutting-edge visuals, physics, and immersive environments while staying true to the noir aesthetic of the originals.

It’s hard to convey what a cultural and groundbreaking moment in time Max Payne was to those who didn’t experience it for the first time back in 2001. When the game was released it set a new standard for cinematic storytelling in video games that simply didn’t exist before then. People talked about the game as they would a TV show, or a movie currently showing in theatres.

The games invited players into a dark, rain-soaked New York City and presented a gritty new protagonist (voiced by James McCaffrey, and with physical likeness provided by Remedy’s Sam Lake – another water-cooler discussion topic!) whose tragic story was underscored by groundbreaking gameplay mechanics — including the revolutionary “bullet time” mechanic.

Max Payne 1

The first game introduced us to Payne, a former NYPD detective turned DEA agent whose life is shattered when his wife and daughter are murdered during a home invasion by junkies high on a new designer drug called Valkyr. Seeking justice and vengeance, Max goes undercover to infiltrate the criminal underworld, and we follow him faithfully through New York City, shady corporations, knotty conspiracies, betrayals, a rooftop showdown and and even the odd drug-induced nightmare sequence.

Fate, betrayal, the price of revenge, internal monologues and flashbacks? Max Payne was already primed for a sequel by the time the credits rolled.

In 2003, Remedy and Rockstar unveiled Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne which saw Payne now working as a detective for the NYPD, and investigating a series of murders linked to a mysterious group known as the “Cleaners” and their rivals the “Inner Circle.”

His investigation leads him back into contact with Mona Sax, a woman from his past, who is also involved in the case.

Throughout the game, Max navigates through personal struggles with his past traumas, while trying to protect Mona and unravel the truth behind the killings. But as the story progresses, Max is framed for murder, leading to a dramatic showdown where he and Mona must fight for their lives.

Remedy has stated that while the remakes will remain faithful to the source material, they will also modernize gameplay elements to align with contemporary standards. Fans can expect refined shooting mechanics, improved AI, and enhanced movement systems. Will we see a new take on bullet time? Time will tell.

Importantly though the gritty narrative of loss, revenge, and redemption mapped out in both games is set to remain intact, with Remedy promising the remake will expand on the story and characters in subtle ways, adding depth and context without altering the core plot.

While no official release date has been announced, the remakes are currently in full production, with Remedy noting the game is “making good progress.”

A late 2025 or early 2026 release date is possible but hard to pinpoint at this stage. Remedy is also working on another big release this year FBC: Firebreak, a 3-player cooperative first-person shooter set within Control’s enigmatic Federal Bureau of Control.

Regardless, the Max Payne remake is shaping up to be a love letter to one of gaming’s most iconic series. While the wait may be long, the promise of revisiting this dark and gripping Noir-soaked world in stunning detail makes it worthwhile.

Throw in a handful of Remedy Connected Universe easter eggs, and maybe an Alan Wake cameo or two and we’re sold!

Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses.
