Chicago P.D. keeps a dark momentum going with its season 12 opener this Wednesday.

“Ten Ninety-Nine” reintroduces us to Voight one month following his brush with death and Hailey Upton’s departure. Voight’s scars may be healing, but inside he’s a man driven by an urge he can’t seem to reign in.

In a four minute long, dialogue-free, opening montage, we see Voight working both alone, and alternately with his team, to crack a monstrous case load that keeps the bodies piling up.

Over a series of shootings, robberies gone wrong, accidental drug overdoes and more, we see that Hank is personally determined to take down those responsible for each death.

So when a triple homicide brings Intelligence to an active crime scene, Voight naturally jumps at the opportunity to take on the case.

However, with little evidence to go on, a reluctant witness, and a perplexing motive, he soon finds himself at odds with Head of Complex Prosecutions, Nina Chapman.

Chapman observes that without Upton to challenge him, Voight has become untethered, and questions if he may be trying to somehow outrun death. Furthermore, she argues his slapdash methods, lack of a B plan, and zero preparations will only serve to have his cases thrown out by a judge.

Although some are unimpressed by Voight’s relentless pace, others have learned to appreciate the adrenaline rush over the previous weeks of hectic activity.

However running into situations without a healthy dose of fear is exactly the sort of thing that can get a good cop killed.

Be prepared for a shocking final scene.
