Insomniac Games used one of the first major Hall H panels of San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to give fans their clearest look yet at Marvel’s Wolverine, debuting a new story trailer and a stack of other reveals ahead of the game’s September 15 launch on PlayStation 5.
Creative director Marcus Smith, game director Mike Daly, and narrative director Walt Williams fronted the panel alongside Marvel Games’ Eric Monacelli. The new trailer opens on a tense confrontation between Logan and Jean Grey and confirms The Hand as one of the game’s enemy factions, with Lady Deathstrike introduced as a primary antagonist. Sabretooth and Omega Red also appear in the footage, with Deathstrike shown wielding a glowing sword that may be capable of cutting through adamantium.
The story is set on Earth-1048, the same shared universe as Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Monacelli confirmed the X-Men don’t exist in this version of Earth-1048. In their place, the studio invented Team X, a spec-ops group formed in the 1960s by Nathaniel Essex to counter the anti-mutant organization Trask. Logan was once a member alongside Sabretooth and Mystique before leaving the group three years before the game begins, on bad terms with Essex. The game picks up as Logan rejoins Team X and travels the globe rescuing kidnapped mutants, including characters like Leech and Nature Girl, while working through enemies from his comics history. Mystique’s presence with the group is notable, too. Team X is described as one of the few places where mutants don’t have to hide who they are.
A shot late in the trailer, where the camera lingers behind Jean Grey as Logan holds a door open for her, has fans speculating she could be a second playable character. It’s a question with some history. A 2023 leak suggested Jean would be playable, though Insomniac later said Logan is the only character players control. The studio hasn’t commented on whether this trailer moment changes that.
Alongside the trailer, Insomniac announced a crossover with Arc System Works’ Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Players who own both games will be able to unlock a Tōkon-inspired costume for Wolverine from day one, with a reciprocal unlock going the other way into Tōkon. Insomniac also revealed a prequel Infinity Comic, written by Williams with art by Luke Ross and a cover by Iban Coello, that lays out the narrative leading into the game’s main story, and reportedly hints that Mr. Sinister may be the true villain behind events.
Game director Mike Daly described the project as built around “the ultimate Wolverine fantasy,” centered on claw combat, Logan’s healing factor, his heightened senses, and the physical weight of his adamantium skeleton, with the story gradually revealing pieces of his lost memory.
Marvel’s Wolverine is published by Sony and releases exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
